Early Days: The 1930s and the British Influence
The first recorded instance of rugby in Mexico dates back to the 1930s, introduced by English companies involved in the oil industry. Teams composed entirely of foreigners played matches reminiscent of their homeland sport. However, the expropriation of oil and subsequent departure of the English put a temporary halt to rugby in Mexico.
Revival in the 1970s: Walter Irvine’s Initiative
The revival of rugby in Mexico can be attributed to Walter Irvine, a British national, who in 1971 reintroduced the sport at the Reforma Athletic Club, an association with British origins. Irvine’s efforts laid the foundation for the sport’s resurgence in Mexico.
Formation of the Unión Mexicana de Rugby
In 1973, Irvine further cemented rugby’s presence by establishing the “Unión Mexicana de Rugby A.C.” (UMR), aiming to structure the sport’s organization nationally. The UMR remained the governing body until the early 2000s.
The Birth of the Mexican Rugby Federation
Thanks to Michel Carner’s efforts, the Mexican Rugby Federation (FMRU) was formalized in 2003, adapting to the federated sports statutes of Mexico. This marked a significant milestone, granting rugby national representation and governance under the Mexican Republic. The FMRU’s affiliation with the International Rugby Board (IRB) in November 2003 allowed Mexican teams to participate in globally recognized events.
Rugby’s Growth and Structure in Mexico
Today, the FMRU actively promotes rugby across the nation, overseeing major leagues, youth leagues, and organizing women’s and veterans’ matches. The Federation’s structure includes training programs for players, coaches, referees, and team managers, contributing to the sport’s holistic development.
Achievements and International Recognition
Mexico’s national rugby team has made its mark in various tournaments and official matches, both domestically and internationally, showcasing ever-improving skills and competitiveness. The inclusion of rugby in the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games, where Mexico clinched a bronze medal, and its debut in the National Olympiad the same year, highlight the sport’s growing prominence in the country.
The story of rugby in Mexico is one of perseverance, passion, and growth. From its initial introduction by foreign nationals to its current status as a recognized and respected sport, rugby in Mexico has come a long way. The FMRU’s efforts in nurturing talent and promoting the sport have been instrumental in its development, paving the way for a brighter future for rugby in Mexico.
