From its inception, the SMA Rugby Club has been a testament to passion, unity, and the transformative power of sport. Founded on a profound love for rugby by Illiana Hernandez, a former player for the University of Celaya’s Bulldogs, the club emerged from her desire to share the enriching experience of rugby with her hometown of San Miguel de Allende. This was a place previously untouched by rugby’s allure but soon to become a pivotal rugby heartland in Mexico.
Building from the Ground Up
Fueled by Illiana’s vision, the journey began with the support of her brother-in-law, Jeff Pendergraft, known affectionately as “Coach P,” and the guidance of Jorge Antonio Zanatta, her former coach. With foundational resources provided by the Bulldogs, including a rugby ball and a blue tackling dummy, the first rugby program in San Miguel was launched. The infectious enthusiasm for the sport quickly spread, laying the groundwork for the establishment of the Angels, a team named in homage to San Miguel’s rich religious heritage and embodying strength, guidance, and protection.
The Rise of the Angels
In its early years, the Angels faced the challenge of insufficient players, a common hurdle for growing teams. However, instead of viewing this as a setback, the club saw an opportunity for collaboration. Reaching out to neighboring city teams in similar straits, they created a coalition of players, competing under the Angels’ banner. This spirit of cooperation not only led to early successes on the field but also fostered a broader community of rugby in the region. Players from these collaborations, inspired by their experiences, went on to seed new teams in their hometowns, spreading the rugby ethos further.
The Angels swiftly gained momentum, hosting local and regional rugby clinics that attracted both newcomers and seasoned players. Joining the National Mexican Rugby Federation (FMRU), the team began competing in and hosting 7s and 15s – a – side games and tournaments, quickly becoming known for the professional quality of their events and the caliber of their players.

As the SMA Rugby Club continued to grow and foster the spirit of rugby within San Miguel de Allende, an unexpected turn of events led to an emotional expansion of the Angels family. The Covid-19 pandemic, a global crisis that touched every aspect of life, including sports, brought unforeseen challenges to rugby communities everywhere. Among those affected were the original girls from the Celaya Bulldogs, Illiana’s former team, which faced dissolution due to the pandemic’s impact.
In the spirit of rugby’s enduring values of camaraderie and solidarity, the SMA Rugby Club – Angels extended a warm welcome to the displaced Bulldogs players. This gesture of inclusion was characteristic of the club’s commitment to the rugby community and its resilience in the face of adversity. The Angels opened their ranks, and for the next three years, the team was further strengthened by the addition of these talented and passionate players.

Their call was answered by both familiar faces and eager newcomers, all united by a shared passion for the game and the community it fosters. Together with Coach P, they began the task of rebuilding, not just a team, but a family.
The arrival of Monica Pacheco, a third-generation Bulldog, marked a pivotal moment in the club’s resurgence. Monica, alongside Neri and Mich, became the cornerstone of the Angels’ revival, drawing in players from across the region.
